Do any of you store brown sugar in bulk? And how do you store it and keep it from getting hard? I really don't want to take a chisel to the thing.......
I know about the bread thing...but you can't really put bread in a bulk container without it going bad quickly can you. I am talking long-term brown sugar storage (at least 6-months to a year).
I seal them in zip lock bags then they are in a box. seems to work, we have had it about a year and still good. I also have bought the huge mason jars at Maceys and emptied the bag in there. for the brown sugar I use and that is open, i have a brown sugar bear from Bed bath and beyond.
I don't open them. I usually buy the brown sugar from Maceys and they come in plastic bags. 2 bags fit in the ziplocs. The bears are little terra cotta things and you soak them for 30 min. and then throw them into the brown sugar container and it should keep the sugar soft for about 3 months i think. so far so good. We use alot of brown sugar though for oatmeal and stuff so we probably rotate through it quicker than most people.
Whenever I have come across a great sale on brown sugar and purchased a sizable amount, I have stored it in the freezer. I know that probably wont help when doomsday hits and we have no power, but it works great in the meantime.
Seriously... the best! 10 minutes prep, 25 minutes to rise, 25 minutes to cook... DONE! Pizza in 30 minutes... cinnamon rolls in 45 minutes. I feel so domesticated!
5 c. bread flour 1/4 c. white sugar 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp rounded new PREMIUM SAF-Instant yeast 2 tsp EASY SQUEEZY SOY LECITHIN (don't measure, just easy squeezy 2 quarter size squirts) 2 c. hot/warm water *add 1 3/4 c. and then add 1/4 slowly if necessary*
1. mix dry ingredients 2. make 2 dimples in dry ingredients. Fill with lecithin. Add water. Mix for 1 minute and check consistency. (should be sticky and pull itself off bowl) 3. Mix/knead in mixer (with hook attachment) on medium setting for 5 minutes. (or 10 minutes by hand) Do NOT use more flour after kneading... none on the counter.) 4. Spray counter and hands with cooking spray
At this point you can make bread... and everything from pizza to dessert braids. Just visit THIS website for recipes, ingredients and further instructions.
You can purchase the yeast and lecithin together for only $15. (It makes 44 loaves of bread!) She also left some at my house if you want to stop by and get one from me.

I don't know how to store brown sugar best, but I do know if you warm it slightly in the microwave it softens back up and you can use it.
Put a peice of bread in the container!

Mae- so do you open the brown sugar bags and then seal them? Never heard of a brown sugar bear -sounds EXCITING! LOL

leaving a crust of bred in the bin would last just as long as the brown sugar bear especially if it's sealed tightly.
